Capturing Caravaggio
February 20, 2020

An evening of Baroque music at St Paul's Lutheran Church in Durham, NC featuring a pre-concert lecture on the Baroque artist Caravaggio by Richmond, VA artist Miguel Carter-FIsher. Jacqueline Nappi, the program producer, played the harpsichord. Elizabeth "Libby" Phelps and Nicholas DiEugenio performed on the violin and were joined by Oliver Weston on cello. A snowstorm did not deter the audience and a power outage near the end of the lecture turned it into a special evening. The dark chapel and total silence from building heating systems provided a stunning environment.

During my time in North Carolina, I joined my standpartner and violinist extraordinaire, Jackie Saed Wolborsky, to play Bach’s Concerto for two violins. We talk about the experience of learning a piece from our childhood all over again as adults.

Bach: Violin Sonata in A minor
As a fellow at the New World Symphony, I was fortunate enough to play for renown gamba player Jordi Savall in a masterclass in 2013. Click the link above to see my performance of the glorious Andante from Bach’s second unaccompanied violin sonata and our subsequent conversation.

“The LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY was founded in 2004 by Pierre Boulez in conjunction with the Festival’s executive director Michael Haefliger. Since then, some 130 highly gifted young musicians from all corners of the globe have gathered together every summer in Lucerne. Working together in daily rehearsals, workshops, and lessons, the participants are trained in basic skills for performing contemporary music. The teaching staff is made up of members of the Parisian Ensemble Intercontemporain, one of the most celebrated ensembles in the field of modern music.

The 2010 Academy repertoire was recorded live during rehearsals and concerts of the Academy in summer 2010. The double CD is the only audio recording of the Lucerne Festival Academy Orchestra under the baton of renowned maestro Pierre Boulez – available worldwide.” accentus music
